80 years ago, in August 1936, the regimental insignia was distributed to legionnaires of the 1st Foreign Cavalry Regiment (1er REC) of the French Foreign Legion. It remains the oldest distinctive unit insignia used within the Legion. The 1er REC also remains the only cavalry unit of the current Foreign Legion.
The 1er REC was established in 1921 (officially in 1922) in Tunisia (North Africa). The regiment was composed of former cavalryman from the Russian Empire, Hungary, Austria or Prussia. It fought in Morocco, Levant (Syria and Lebanon), Europe, French Indochina, Algeria, Chad, Iraq. The regiment also served in the Central African Republic, Cambodia, ex-Yugoslavia, Ivory Coast, Afghanistan or Mali.
