Veronika

Veronika is a song of the French Foreign Legion. It uses the melody and lyrics of the popular German military song “In Sanssouci, am Mühlenberg” (Veronika-Marie) composed by Herms Niel in 1936, for the German Wehrmacht. The song was first recorded in 1939.

The Foreign Legion adopted the song initially with original German lyrics, most likely in the 1940s, and modified it later into French. In old Legion songbooks, the German version is called simply Veronika, while the French version is officially titled Veronika (1925).

1.
A la sortie de la caserne,
Il y a un vieux moulin.
Deux jolies filles habitent là,
Et chantent soir et matin.
La blonde c’est Véronika,
Et la brune c’est Marie.
Ces jolies filles sont les amours
De toute la compagnie.

2.
Pira la la,
Pira la la,
Pira la la la la la la la la.
Pira la la,
Pira la la, Véronika Marie.

3.
Pour toi Véronika,
Ha ! Ha ! Ha !
Pour toi Véronika,
Ha ! Ha ! Ha !
Pour toi Véronika,
Véronika Marie.
