Le front haut et l’âme fière (The head high and the proud soul) is the regimental song of the 5th Foreign Regiment (5e RE) of the French Foreign Legion. It was composed in Tourane, Indochina, in 1955. The lyrics were written by Lieutenant Menestrau, and the music was composed by Lieutenant Dautricourt, the regiment’s chief of music. The march was recorded, without the lyrics, the following year in Algeria at Nedroma, the regiment’s new garrison. The song was only introduced in the official songbook of the Legion in 1975, at the request of Colonel Cholley, then commander of the 5e RMP (Pacific Mixed Regiment), successor of the original regiment.
