In late January 2026, General Cyrille Youchtchenko, the commander of the French Foreign Legion, visited the 5th Foreign Regiment (5e RE) stationed in Mayotte, a French overseas territory in the Indian Ocean.
From January 27 to 31, General Youchtchenko met with members of the 5th Foreign Regiment, whose camp and facilities in Dzaoudzi had been seriously damaged by Cyclone Chido, a powerful storm that also affected the surrounding region. During the visit, the general joined official meals, spoke directly with men from different roles, and toured Quartier Cabaribère, the regiment’s base. He personally praised the strong efforts made by the 5e RE legionnaires to rebuild their camp and restore normal operations after the cyclone, highlighting their teamwork, resilience, and strong esprit de corps.
