DLEM: Detachment open to public

During October 6-7, 2018, the Foreign Legion Detachment in Mayotte (DLEM) opened to the public the doors of Quartier Cabaribère, their military base in Dzaoudzi, Mayotte.

Like every year, hundreds of visitors came to visit the Legion’s base in Dzaoudzi. Families with children enjoyed several attractions built inside the base. Kids were allowed to shoot with an air rifle under the supervision of DLEM legionnaires. The legionnaires also presented their firearms, including the Minimi machine gun or the M2 Browning 12,7 heavy machine gun.

The DLEM is one of the two Foreign Legion units stationed abroad. The unit has been placed in Mayotte since 1975. Its legionnaires maintain the French presence in the region and support French forces operating in the southern zone of the Indian Ocean and the east coast of Africa. The DLEM also protect the strategically important Mozambique Channel and dispatch small rotating detachments to the isolated Glorioso Islands located north of Madagascar.
