3e REI: Visit from General Youchtchenko

In late November 2024, the French Foreign Legion’s commander-in-chief, General Cyrille Youchtchenko, came to visit the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (3e REI) stationed in French Guiana, South America.

Nicknamed the “Father of the Legion,” the commander made an inspection to see how the regiment was fulfilling its role as a unit that maintains order and the French presence in the region and provides challenging jungle training for French and foreign troops.

During his visit, the general met the legionnaires during operations, military training and in their barracks. He also officially inaugurated the new Family Club, built as part of the French Ministry of Defense’s project for the families of serving members of the Armed Forces.

General Youchtchenko took command of the Foreign Legion in July 2023. He is of Ukrainian descent. He joined the Legion as a lieutenant in 1995 and was assigned to the 13th Foreign Legion Demi-Brigade in Djibouti. He commanded this regiment from 2010 to 2011, before the unit’s transfer from the Horn of Africa to the United Arab Emirates.
