2e REG: A platoon in New Caledonia in 2024

A platoon of the 2nd Foreign Engineer Regiment (2e REG) of the French Foreign Legion is currently deployed to New Caledonia, a special overseas collectivity of France located east of Australia, in the Pacific Ocean.

The 2e REG men (including their captain) arrived in late February 2024 and were assigned to the New Caledonia Pacific Marine Infantry Regiment (RIMaP-NC). They form an engineer element of the regiment’s Combined Arms Company (COMIA) which is stationed at Camp Broche in Plum, in the South Province of the island. The cavalrymen from the 1st Chasseurs Regiment (1er RCh) are also part of the company.

The regiment, like the other French overseas units, is composed of rotational elements usually rotating every four months. The Legion combat engineers will carry out both operational and construction tasks. Their departure back to France is scheduled for this June.

Legionnaires serve in New Caledonia on a regular basis. Last year, three Foreign Legion regiments had their men deployed there.
