1er REC: Neutralisation of two terrorists during Operation Barkhane in Mali

On 4 March 2020, during anti-terrorist Operation Barkhane in Mali (West Africa), a reconnaissance group of the 2nd Squadron, 1st Foreign Cavalry Regiment (1er REC) got contact with two armed terrorist group members and neutralized them. The action was captured by reporters from Paris Match, a popular French newspaper. See video.

The 2nd Squadron reconnaissance group made a vanguard for a large military convoy going from Ménaka (eastern Mali) to the Liptako-Gourma region, a historical region situated in the Mali-Burkina Faso-Niger border area. The 1er REC is currently serving in Africa as the Task Force Centurion. In the Liptako-Gourma region, the cavalrymen replaced the Task Force Altor, a unit made up of paratroopers from the 2e REP, another regiment of the Foreign Legion. According to Paris Match, 80 rebels were already neutralized during three weeks.

The rebels were burried by Nigerien soldiers, who serve also in Operation Barkhane, alongside French troops.
