3e REI: Hurricane Irma 2017

Since September 11, 2017, legionnaires from the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (3e REI), the Foreign Legion’s regiment based in French Guiana, have participated in rescue operations on the island of Saint Martin, in the Caribbean Sea, damaged by Hurricane Irma.

Put on alert on September 9, around 150 legionnaires from 2nd Company, 3e REI left French Guiana in South America the next day. They arrived in Martinique in the Caribbean and on September 11, the legionnaires were transported to Saint Martin, to join the rescue operations on the world’s smallest inhabited island divided between two nations (France and Netherland), damaged by Hurricane Irma four days earlier.
