J’avais un camarade (I had a comrade) is a song of the French Foreign Legion. It uses the melody of the popular German song “Ich hatte einen kamaraden”. The text was written in 1809, by German poet Ludwig Uhland. In 1825, composer Friedrich Silcher set it to music. In the German Armed Forces, it is an integral part of a military funeral. The Foreign Legion probably adopted it in the 19th century. It was translated much later, in the 20th century.
